Windy Beach
The island of Amrum, located in the North Sea near the coastline of Germany, presents a landscape dominated by incredibly vast beaches. Flat sandy areas alternate with newly formed dunes, which grow only during the summer months. When winter arrives, with strong storms and high tides, most of them will be wrecked and some of them utterly destroyed. Only the largest and strongest dunes will survive, and grow from year to year, soon to be covered by vegetation.
The wide belt of dunes offers ideal breeding sites for seabirds such as terns, ringed povers and oystercatchers. During fall, when birds of passage visit Amrum, huge flocks fly over the sandy beaches, hardly impressed by the stormy winds of the sea.
