This photograph shows a beautiful sunrise on the island of Amrum, located in the North Sea close to the German coastline. The awakening world is filled with warmest sunlight and the crisp and clean air of the morning. The shore of the island is heavily formed by the tides. To the south and west of the island a gigantic beach made of white sands stretches over a distance of 10 miles, up to one mile wide in places.
Parts of the beach are flooded with icy salt water twice a day. The retreating water leaves behind an ever-new network of puddles and ripples and other patterns in the sand. This photograph – captured exactly at that special magical moment, in between the dark of the night and the bright sunlight of a sunny day – presents glistening reflections in one of the many small expanses of water, which were born from the recent flood.
