Eyjafjallajökull

Eyjafjallajökull: The volcanic massif named nearly unpronounceable for foreigners, attracted attention just recently in 2010. Following several enormous volcanic ash eruptions, European air traffic came to a halt for several days. This outburst created new craters and crevasses on the plateau Fimmvörðuháls, situated between the glaciers Eyjafjallajökull to the west and Mýrdalsjökull to the east.

Even one year later the area was still filled with glowing rocks and swathes of volcanic gases. This photograph features an impressive contrast between the colourful rocks of the eruption fissure and the blue sky with its decoratively curved clouds. In the background the snowfields of the glacier can be seen – still covered by grey, volcanic ashes.
