Escaliers

Steps made of stone, leading upwards in elegant curve. Involuntarily the observer feels drawn upwards towards an unknown and hidden destination. The stairs, following almost the diagonal, finally unite with the other prominent lines, formed by the handrails. Thus the basic tension of this scene emerges in an image reduced to its absolute essential.

The fine art photography “Escaliers” was created in the close vicinity of Basilica Sacré-Cœur de Montmartre in Paris. The Sacred Heart (of Jesus) is certainly one of the most photographed landmarks of the city. However, the attention of thousands and thousands of visitors is only rarely drawn to these less impressive details in direct neighbourhood of the more famous designs. Often however, it is exactly these details, away from the bustle and crowds, in which we find the real peace and strength of a place, where we find its actual character.
