New production – a legal replacement or a copy of the original?

How does the art market go about replacing or reproducing photographs that are damaged?

Many galleries/gallery operators are of the same opinion as Inside-Gallery, that a piece of work damaged by external circumstances can be replaced by reproduction under certain conditions.

The reproduction of a piece of work, such as something irreparably damaged by water, can only take place at a gallery. However, a strict condition is that the gallery keeps a corresponding catalogue of works or an edition list.

Once the work has been returned and properly, legally documented and destroyed, an exchange can follow. The reproduction is labelled on the work correspondingly and also monitored, documented and certified by the gallery.

Ultimately, the label decides the value.
